The kids will be wrapping up the school year soon; the weather is not too hot or too cold. It’s the perfect weather to spend time outdoors with the family. I recommend grabbing a bottle of OFF bug spray and some sunscreen. The warm weather brings those nasty bugs and it is extremely important to protect your skin from direct sunrays. Twilight Tuesday starts again this month. It is held at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park. The free outdoor concerts feature popular musicians like The Melvin Turnage Band, Steve Davis and Dirty Muggs.

St. Louis Microfest Beer Festival
Taste beers from more than 80 breweries and 100 international and craft brews during this annual beer festival. A ticket to one of three sessions includes a commemorative tasting glass, as well as access to cooking demonstrations, a silent auction, live music, food tents, and more. Times: Fri, May 5, 6 – 10 p.m. & Saturday, May 6, 12 – 4 p.m. and 6:00 – 10 p.m., Upper Muny parking lot in Forest Park.
Florissant Valley of Flowers Festival
Celebrated since 1963, this three day weekend Festival truly has activities for everyone. Carnival games and exciting rides are featured at the Knights of Columbus Fairgrounds. From a flower and plant sale to culturally diverse musical performances, baseball games, craft and flea market sales, children’s activities and the “Hispanic Festival” you can find a little of everything at the Eagan Center. Good food abounds at all Festival locations. The Tot Wheels Parade for our youngest participants and the official “Big Parade” beginning at the Eagan Center highlight the weekend. Dates: May 5 – May 7
Cinco de Mayo on Cherokee Street
Cinco de Mayo is on a Friday this year but will be celebrated on Cherokee St on May 6. St. Louis’ largest street celebration for Cinco de Mayo includes authentic food and drink, street entertainment, live music, arts, crafts, and specials at participating shops in the Cherokee neighborhood. Free. Time: 10 a.m.–9:00 p.m. Cherokee Street between Nebraska and Iowa Ave.
The art fair will be May 12 – May 14 at Laumeier Sculpture Park. We visit this park once a year. Art Fair at Laumeier is a nationally acclaimed fine art and craft fair at Laumeier Sculpture Park, one of the world’s premier open-air museums. A highly competitive juried show, the art fair receives over 1,000 applications, of which 150 nationally recognized artists representing clay, fiber, glass, jewelry, leather, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking/drawing, sculpture and wood are selected to participate. In addition to the artwork, food and drink from a variety of vendors is available and two stages provide exciting adult and children’s entertainment. Creation Location provides hands-on art activities for children and demonstrations by both performing and visual artists.
The flowers are blooming at Shaw Nature Reserve, and you can have some of that same beauty in your own yard. On May 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., several local nurseries are joining forces at the Reserve for the Wildflower Market. They’ll be selling hundreds of varieties of wildflowers, ferns, trees and shrubs. You can also get expert advice on how to care for your new plants.
May 20th is the day to share with family and friends. And what better place to share it than the family farm! Enjoy outdoor festival foods and live entertainment at this old-fashioned all-American festival. Kid’s activities include pony rides, children’s play area, petting farm, carnival rides, and inflatable. Fee charged for some activities. 10am – 5pm
IndiHop is celebrating its’ 6th year in The Grove and on Cherokee Street, Saturday, May 20th, 2017 from 1:00pm – 7:00pm. Sample beer inside twenty five businesses in each neighborhood. Shuttles transport folks between neighborhoods and local musicians entertain at each stop. 50 tastes, 18 bands, 5 shuttles! IndiHop is St. Louis’ only community building beer festival in two neighborhoods!
The parade will be held on Sunday, May 21 at 1pm on Market Street. Spectators of this annual parade are awed by the intricate dance routines of marching bands, the wail and throb of drum and bugle corps, and the fancy steps of majorettes and drum majors. They are also treated to a distinguished part of African-American heritage. Floats range from simple crepe streamers draped over family sedans to elaborate moving works of art. While the May Day Parade has evolved through the years, one thing remains constant: the festivities, anchored by the parade, become bigger and better each year.
The Saint Louis County Greek Fest will be held May 26 – May 29. Whether you’re of Greek descent or just love ethnic cuisine, this GreekFest is a lively environment in which to experience the Greek community’s deeply rooted traditions and heritage. The festival features authentic Greek food and pastries, live Greek music, authentic Greek folk dancing, Agora Marketplace, church tours, a kid’s corner and more.
St. Louis African Arts Festival
This festival will be held May 27 – May 29. The annual African Arts Festival includes an African marketplace, children’s activities, hands-on activities, performing artists, African and African-American artifacts, jewelry & textiles, guided art tours, cultural demonstrations and more.
Memorial Day Holiday
Memorial Day will be celebrated Monday, May 29th. This is the unofficial kick off to summer. Many of the local pools open this week. Stay tuned for an upcoming post highlighting local area pools.
As you can see, there is plenty to do this month. As the temperatures warm, there are more outdoor events to attend. Many of these events are family friendly so pack up the kids and make a day of it.
